My first stop in this new, formalized experiment was Planet Fitness.
The irony wasn’t lost on me, a thirty-six-year-old actress grappling with heartbreak and loss, attempting to emulate a global Hollywood heartthrob within the fluorescent-lit, budget-friendly confines of a chain gym. But there was no room for ego here, only for work. I started with his workout routine, meticulously pieced together from various interviews and articles I’d found online. Although I had always considered myself reasonably fit, dedicated to a certain level of physical maintenance, I was surprised to find that some of the fundamentals proved to be a significant challenge.
Push-ups, a seemingly basic exercise, left my arms trembling, my form faltering after only a few repetitions. The ab workouts he reportedly favored made my core scream in protest, revealing an endurance level that felt abysmal compared to the on-screen Spartan persona I was studying.However, the more intense exercises, the weightlifting and strength training components, didn’t faze me as much as I’d anticipated.
